In Shirley Jackson's short stories, she dwells on everyday interactions and concerns to transform the mundane into the fearful. This is accomplished by highlighting the trifles within the characters' psychology. Terror is created through the fear of one's identity within themselves and the society at large. I will analyze three of stories from her collection The Lottery, and Other Short Stories under this thematic lens.
