“The Lottery” is set in a small town on a nice summer day. Villagers gather around the town square while children gather stones and rocks and pile them up. People are congenial as more and more show up, showcasing familiarity. They are their for the annual “lottery.” Mr. Summers, the man in charge of the operation, goes about business as usual. He does a roll call and once everyone has been spoken for, they begin the lottery. Every family chooses a piece of paper, the family with the black dot on the paper must then redraw again with the family members. It is the Hutchinson family and Tessie, the matriarch has been chosen. She protests, after having been one of the more positive members of the community; she states it isn’t fair. Meanwhile, the other villagers gather the stones and throw them at her.
